"
MALAGA BOAST FOR THE CITY OF DERRY AIRPORT"

Northern Ireland Leisure Travel News - Nov 2004

THE City of Derry Airport will be operating flights to Malaga and Alicante
via Teleticket and Servitour from Summer 2005.

Speaking at the launch of the flights from the North West, the Commercial Director of Servitour and Teleticket, Olivia Mullan, said the decision to operate services from the City of Derry Airport was based on the company identifying the strong market from the region.

Research Olivia commented: "We have carried out research and discovered that a significant number of passengers using our services to and from Ireland are from the North West region and we are therefore confident that the North West public will support us in this new and exciting venture.

"The support of the local Travel Trade and the North West public will allow us to increase the frequency of the routes."

The Malaga flight will operate on Thursdays and is already on sale from £139 return. However, as they anticipate overwhelming demand, there will also shortly launch Easter departures to both Alicante and Malaga on the Spanish coast.

She explained that the programme is unique in that 30 per cent of their seats are sold in Spain to the Spanish tourist and business market. Olivia Mullan said: "We will be promoting and marketing the North West region of Ireland to the Spanish market and hope to see up to 2,400 Spanish tourists and business travellers making the trip to the North West during the first year."

Boost The Mayor, Councillor Gearoid O'Heara, welcoming the announcement, said it was a major boost to the Airport and the North West region as a whole.

"Today's announcement of direct flights to Malaga and Alicante is excellent news for the Airport and region.

"From a tourism perspective, we have a great advantage to market the North West region to five million people in the Alicante and Malaga region." The Chairman of the Airport Committee, Councillor John Kerr, additionally welcomed the two new destinations. He said: "The addition of Malaga and
Alicante to our Summer 2005 programme, which already includes Majorca, Salou, Faro and Lanzarote is excellent news."
