"Jobs boost as airport Bag Tag scheme takes off"

Newsletter - 7th April 2007

UP to 20 jobs are to be created at the Province's main airports with the introduction of an innovative new service for travellers.
The Bag Safe and Bag Tag system will be launched at both the George Best Belfast City Airport and Belfast International Airport on April 12, each offering additional peace of mind to passengers.

The relatively simple and inexpensive service is already in use and proving popular throughout the world.

Regional manager Julie Halliday said: "Bag Safe is a luggage shrink wrap, which prevents tampering with luggage so it gives extra piece of mind and security for both the owner and the airline.

"It also prevents damage to the luggage with several of the world's leading international airlines already insisting upon luggage being wrapped before check-in as it can save them the cost of people claiming for damage which can sometimes occur during movement."

The tag element of the operation which follows an investment of £100,000 has a particular resonance given increasing incidents of lost luggage and, while it won't prevent bags going astray, it should make their recovery much easier.

"Every month 310,000 pieces of luggage world-wide are mislaid," said Ms Halliday.

"Bag Tag is a global tracking system which gives luggage a metal, permanently attached identification tag, unique to its owner. Should the customer arrive in Paris, but their luggage is found in Brazil, the on-line tracking ensures they are quickly reunited."

The jobs, in retail and promotion, will be spread across both the Province's airports.
